The Internet Reacts Differently
When I later shared this story online, the reactions were split:
“You’re wrong”
- “If you can afford luxury dining, you can tip.”
- “That’s just how it works.”
- “Servers remember people like you.”
“You’re right”
- “22% should be the tip.”
- “This is deceptive pricing.”
- “Tipping culture is broken.”
The divide was fierce.
The Bigger Problem With Tipping Culture
Tipping was never meant to:
- Replace wages
- Enforce class boundaries
- Shame customers publicly
Yet that’s exactly what it’s become.
Especially in high-end establishments.
What Restaurants Could Do Better
Simple solutions exist:
- Eliminate tipping entirely
- Raise menu prices transparently
- Pay staff properly
- Clearly state policies in plain language
Some restaurants already do this—and thrive.
What Diners Should Learn From My Experience
Before dining out:
- Read the fine print
- Ask about service charges
- Know your rights
And remember:
- Paying the bill is not a moral failure
- You are not obligated to reward confusion
