The Bill: Sticker Shock
Dinner was… fine.
Not mind-blowing. Not life-changing. Just fine.
The service? Polite, but distant. Formal, not warm. Efficient, not personal.
By the time dessert plates were cleared, I was already bracing myself for the bill.
When it arrived, my heart sank.
- Tasting menu for two
- Wine pairing
- Tax
- 22% service charge
The total was hundreds more than expected.
The service charge alone was already higher than what I normally tip anywhere else.
I asked the server calmly:
“Is the service charge distributed to staff?”
She nodded.
“Yes. It covers service.”
So when I signed the receipt, I wrote $0 on the tip line.
Not angrily.
Not dramatically.
Just honestly.
