Step-by-Step: Grandpa’s Lawn Mower Blade Sharpening Trick
Step 1: Disconnect the Spark Plug
Safety first. Always disconnect the spark plug before touching the blade.
Step 2: Tilt the Mower Safely
Tilt the mower on its side with the carburetor and air filter facing upward to prevent oil leaks.
Step 3: Secure the Blade
Use a wooden block wedged between the blade and mower deck to stop it from moving.
Step 4: Identify the Cutting Edge
The cutting edge is usually the lifted side of the blade.
Step 5: File in One Direction Only
- Follow the existing angle
- Push the file away from you
- Use smooth, even strokes
- Never file back and forth
Grandpa’s rule:
“Five to ten strokes per side is enough.”
Step 6: Match Both Sides
Count your strokes and apply the same number to each side to maintain balance.
Step 7: Wipe Clean and Reconnect
Remove debris, reconnect the spark plug, and you’re done.
