The Big Myth: “Drink Less Water”
Many seniors try to fix the problem by drinking less water overall.
This often backfires.
When you don’t drink enough during the day:
- The body concentrates urine
- The bladder becomes more irritated
- Urgency increases
- Kidneys compensate later
- Nighttime urination worsens
Urologists frequently warn:
“Dehydration during the day can cause more bathroom trips at night.”
The solution isn’t less water.
It’s smarter water timing.
The Hormone That Matters Most at Night
Your body relies on a hormone called ADH (antidiuretic hormone).
ADH:
- Signals the kidneys to slow urine production at night
- Helps you sleep longer without waking
As we age:
- ADH production decreases
- Kidneys become less responsive
Poor hydration patterns make this worse.
